Choices opened in September 2000, with its mission to make it possible, even easy, for high school dropouts to return to school.
Students select from one of five strands:
- an endorsement of employment/workplace and life skills, stabilizing the personal finances, building a psychology of success and preparing students to resume academic instruction;
- the completion of a high school diploma;
- the completion of a high school diploma with endorsements comparable to strand one;
- diplomas with some college course work; or
- a diploma with full college preparation.
We also have an accelerated lab which serves three purposes:
- to remediate,
- to accelerate; and
- to engage students in book talks, peer culture, and more.
New students enter the school about every two weeks. First-time students take an orientation session that focuses on the students' roles and responsibilities in creating the environment, as well as how the student can adapt and fit in to the Choices opportunity.
Each student has an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) -- a personal plan leading toward graduation. Grades are not given at Choices. Students are expected to persevere on their work or projects until the work reaches the standard(s) set by the teacher. Students do not get by with minimal effort. The work or project is not completed until it is considered quality work by the student and the particular staff involved.
