About Us
Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School opened in 1959 - the result of commitment on the part of district residents to the idea of a community high school with high standards for students and staff, and a solid goal of excellence in education.
H-F's opening year saw enrollment in all four grades at 1170 students. There were 51 classrooms, which included ten English classes, ten Social Science, eight Science, six Mathematics, five Foreign Language, three Physical Education, one Homemaking, three Industrial Arts, two Art, and three Music classes. A cafeteria, library and administrative area were also included.
These days the commitment to excellence continues. Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School received state nomination in the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools Program in 1994-95. The school was also nominated for recognition in the Department of Education's Drug-Free School Recognition Program, becoming the only high school in Illinois to be nominated as both a Blue Ribbon and a Drug-Free School.
The Homewood-Flossmoor School District now encompasses nearly 11.5 square miles with a population of about 42,000 residents in Homewood, Flossmoor, and parts of Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hazel Crest, and Olympia Fields. The community is culturally diverse and demographically upscale with average family incomes ranging from $32,000-$111,000. Residential home values average between $68,000-$214,000. An Ice Arena, twelve tennis courts, a jogging track, and a fitness trail running throughout the campus are indicative of the close relationship H-F enjoys with the community and the opportunities available to students.
Today, approximately 2,600 students, grades nine through 12, receive daily instruction. More than 90% of our graduates continue on to college - many pursuing studies at some of the most prestigious schools in the U.S. and abroad.
