Every child can learn. Every child can obtain an acceptable level of academic success, develop emotionally, socially and physically to his or her maximum potential and prepare for a successful future when the school strives to provide a quality educational environment. Lewisville High School commits itself to providing this quality environment for student success.
History:
In 1855, a two-story log building called Holford Hall served as the first meeting place and school house in the Lewisville area. By 1887, this one-room school had evolved to a little wooden building with separate grades to hold the growing population. It was on that corner of College Street and Cowan that Lewisville High School was born.
From 1901 to 1913, LHS was designated as a first class high school, graduating six students per year. The athletic program, which has become a significant part of LHS spirit and tradition, was introduced just after W.W.I. A new high school was built on Purnell and South Charles by the 1940's when the average graduating class soared to 40.
Football was becoming a favorite past time within the community and LHS instinctively developed a proud spirit of competition. The decade of the 50's marched in, bringing with it the "Band that Marches With Pride", the school song, and in increasing population.
As our country experienced the tumultuous 60's, Lewisville continued to grow. Between 1964 and 1968, LHS added the drill team and moved into its current facility. The average graduating class escalated into the hundreds.
The decade of the 70's was one of intense growth for the nation, the Metroplex, and Lewisville. The DFW area reached one million and the number of LHS graduates climbed to 300. Coach, Bill Shipman instilled the passion of spirit and pride in the Lewisville fans when the Fighting Farmer Football team made its first bid for the State Championship in 1972. It was this same year that mascot Big Bad John was born.
The 80's saw immense growth in the community. Marcus High School opened in 1981 because LHS graduates numbered over 900. By 1988, a new tradition was born - "The Battle of the Axe" football game. it was during this time that LHS also because known for its academic excellence.
The 90's has been a decade of great "esprit de corps" in Lewisville. Competition is alive and well at LHS. 1993 and 1996 brought football state championships under Coach Ronnie Gage, with the Fighting Farmers featured on the Team Cheerios box. This spirit of competition is pervasive throughout the LHS campus. LHS boasts cheerleading championships, marching band sweepstakes, UIL triumphs, outstanding Student Council and national vocational victories. Our organizations are very strong district, state and nation wide.
As we recognize and applaud the 1900s, we look to the future knowing that our LHS spirit and pride will continue to propel us as we start this new millennium.
