North Royalton High School had its first graduating class of two students in 1907. Soon after, it was decided that a new high school was needed and the local taxpayers voted to build a new school. On September 8, 1908 a new high school, located on Royalton Road, was dedicated. The new high school included a bell and bell tower to summon children to school. The bell from the original high school now resides outside of the current-day high school on Ridge Road in a replica of the original bell tower. In 1923, bonds were issued and the high school building was added onto in order to modernize and expand the school. Over the next 30 years, the population in North Royalton grew quickly and the need for a new building became evident. In 1951, a 24-acre site was purchased on Ridge Road and a new high school building was constructed. The newly constructed high school was named E. E. Root High School, in honor of E. E. Root’s service to the North Royalton School District over several decades. Multiple additions were added as the enrollment grew and in November of 1974, a bond issue was passed to build a large addition to the high school. The current Media Center was added and the building was rededicated as North Royalton High School. In the late 1980’s, a performing arts center, science lab, classrooms, and offices were added to accommodate the middle school population which attended school in the same building. In 1997, a new middle school was built allowing the high school to return to a 9-12 grade building.
