About Us :
Thornton is populated by a diverse student-body and dynamic community reflecting many cultures and backgrounds. Visit the campus and you will encounter students whose heritage is Asian, Filipino, Latino,Indian, Middle Eastern, African-American, and Anglo. This combination of cultures, strengths, and values makes Thornton a model and example of the democratic foundations that have made our nation great. In the spring, the school plans and holds a “Multicultural Day” of booths, food, and activities to celebrate our diversity.
The school is home to a dedicated team of educational professionals who are committed to providing high quality instructional strategies to students. Various staff members are recognized experts and trainers in the areas of technology, academics including literacy and reading comprehension, and the arts and electives.
Many staff members continue to update their skills and knowledge by taking workshops, attending conferences, and enrolling in higher education classes and programs.
The instructional program consists of honors and regular academic classes for students that are supported by integrated, coordinated English Language Learner (ELL) and Special Education programs. The school’s various departments and programs meet regularly under chairleaders to plan and review goals and strategiesfor improving student success.
Students have access to computers in many classrooms. In some science and history classes, students can work individually and in teams to carry out computer science projects and to design web pages. Staff members in conjunction with the Technology Committee are acquiring donated computers from nearby companies and organizations with the goal of having computers stations in all classrooms.
A strong electives program includes classes in French, Mandarin, Spanish, Music and Band, Arts and Crafts,Leadership, and Yearbook. A comprehensive physical education program for all students emphasizes physical skills, healthy habits, group activities and social skills, and lifelong fitness.
The Web program is a peer mentoring program in which 8th grade students guide and advise 7th grade students throughout the year on social and leadership skills. The program is under the direction of the student activities director, Ms. Rita DeTar. Eighth grade students hold meetings with 7th grade students and organize activities and lessons for the 7th graders that regularly take place on campus and in science classrooms.
A strong Parent-Teacher-Student-Association (PTSA) meets monthly to plan and support programs and activities that help staff and students in being successful. The PTSA raises funds, recruits volunteers, and organizes events and celebrations for the school and students. These functions do much to increase the sense of community and family at Thornton.
