History:

Union Pines High School is located in a beautiful rural setting in Moore County . The roughly 1,300 students that attend Union Pines are known for their outstanding academics, athletics and diverse talents inside and outside of the classroom. Union Pines High School has some of the brightest students in Moore County with over 3 million dollars in scholarships awarded last year. The growing athletics program is known as being competitive in the 3A Cape Fear Valley Conference. The arts department has an excellent reputation for delighting and awing the community through marching band performances, visual arts shows, the annual musical and concerts. Year after year, the Vikings are the pride of the community and the example of excellence in Moore County.

Union Pines High School opened its doors in 1964 and is located in eastern Moore County. The name was chosen because the school is located directly across from the historic Union Presbyterian Church. The campus is on the site of the old Union Home Academy which served students during the 1800's.

Union Pines High School is a comprehensive 9 - 12 public school on a traditional calendar.  Students participate in a modified block schedule mainly consisting of four courses per semester. Numerous courses are offered at the standard, honors, and Advanced Placement levels and there are opportunities for expanded course selections with the Sandhills Community College courses and NC Virtual Public School.  In addition, we have numerous career and technical courses available on our campus.

Students excel in theater, chorus, visual arts, orchestra and band. The marching band participates in fall competitions across the region bringing home numerous awards. Twenty-eight athletic teams encourage student participation; the Vikings are well-represented in many conference and state championships. UPHS was honored with the prestigious Wells Fargo Conference Cup for the Cape Fear Valley 3A Conference for 2013. The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) has over 100 cadets. Outstanding leadership opportunities are available including participation in academic, drill, and physical fitness meets. The NJROTC Unit has produced thirteen military academy appointments and numerous university scholarships.

The Union Pines Faculty and Staff have implemented many strategies for continuous improvement purposes keeping their eye on the "instructional ball," while remembering the importance of focusing on the whole child.  Our well-rounded students, pleasant staff, community atmosphere, and positive results are reflective of our focus. We are most fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the students of Moore County.
